Dental implants

The modern solution to replace missing teeth

Dental implants at The Lodge Dental Suite

Whether through accident or decay, missing teeth can have a huge impact on your life. Missing teeth affect your appearance, ability to speak and chew.  Many options exist for the replacement of a lost tooth, however, due to improved techniques and advances in the materials used, dental implants have become a much better solution for many people.

Dental Implants are a modern alternative to traditional tooth replacements such as dentures and bridges. Unlike these options, a dental implant will prevent further bone loss which could destabilise adjacent teeth.

Dental implant treatment

A dental implant is a small but strong post used in place of the missing tooth root. The post is placed in the jaw and supports a replacement tooth or teeth. Although artificial, a dental implant will function like a natural tooth, restoring your smile and allowing you to speak and chew normally.

Dental implants can be used for a wide range of treatments; one implant can act as a support base for fixing an individual crown, two implants can replace three or four missing teeth using a dental bridge, or multiple implants can be used to provide a secure foundation for a partial or full denture.

Dental implant treatment normally has two phases:

First, the dental implant is placed in the jaw, this is usually done with local anaesthetic. The dental implant then needs to integrate fully with your jaw bone, a process that usually takes between 6- 8 weeks, during which time it is possible to wear temporary dentures or bridges.

Once the jaw has healed, we will take impressions which will be used to construct a custom-made crown or bridge that will match your natural teeth. This will then be attached to the dental implant.

Dental Implant FAQ's

Q: How much do dental implants cost?

A: The cost of dental implants depends on your personal needs.  At The Lodge Dental Suite we will provide you with a written estimate and treatment plan following our initial consultation. We also offer a range for payment options and plans which we will be happy to discuss with you.

Q: Are dental implants suitable for everyone?

A: Dental implants are suitable for most people over the age of 18. During the initial consultation we will assess you for suitability, as certain medical conditions may affect the implant.

Q: Can I replace removable dentures with dental implants?

A: Yes.   2-4 dental implants can be placed in the lower jaw and 4 implants in the upper jaw and the denture can then be secured into position but removed to clean with ease.

Q: How painful is it to have a dental implant fitted?

A: We will fit dental implants under local anaesthetic which will numb your mouth – just like when you have a filling or other dental work.  After the initial stage is completed you may have some pain, bruising or swelling but this should last no longer than one week and can be eased with over-the-counter painkillers. If you’re concerned that your pain is abnormal, you should always consult your dentist.

Q: How long should a dental implant last?

A: Dental implants should last as long as your natural teeth but just like your natural teeth it is important that you look after them properly.

Q: What is the differance between a dental implant and a bridge

A: A dental implant is screwed in to replace a missing tooth, whereas bridges use the surrounding teeth to fill the missing gap. Bridges which support two or more teeth may require cutting of natural teeth. In some techniques such as teeth in a day,
bridges are used to support multiple implants.
