Dental Implants to stabilise dentures

September 7, 2020

Missing teeth can have a huge impact on your life, affecting your appearance and ability to speak and chew.  Due to improved techniques and advances in the materials used, dental implants have become a brilliant solution for people who suffer from missing teeth. At The Lodge Dental Suite we use implants to support teeth replacement treatments whether it’s for one tooth or all your teeth and have many options to help you fix your smile.

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a small but strong post used in place of the missing tooth root. The post is placed in the jaw and supports a replacement tooth or teeth. Although artificial, a dental implant will function like a natural tooth, restoring your smile and allowing you to speak and chew normally. Implants work to stabilise the replacement tooth or teeth by offering a base for crowns, bridges, or dentures to attach to. Unlike treatments that do not use implants, having dentures, crowns or bridges stabilised with implants will prevent further bone loss which could destabilise adjacent teeth.

How dental implants can help you

Dental implants can be used for a wide range of treatments; one implant can act as a support base for fixing an individual crown, two implants can replace three or four missing teeth using a dental bridge, or multiple implants can be used to provide a secure foundation for a partial or full denture. For your individual case we offer a free initial consultation to discuss your personal treatment plan, answer any questions you might have and let you learn more about dental implants.

How the treatment process works

Once we have found the best treatment path for you, we can begin to fix your smile. Dental implant treatments normally consist of two phases:

First, the dental implant is placed in the jaw, this is usually done with local anaesthetic. The dental implant then needs to integrate fully with your jawbone, a process that usually takes between 3 -5 months, during which time it is possible to wear temporary dentures or bridges.

Once the jaw has healed, we will take impressions which will be used to construct a custom-made crown or bridge that will match your natural teeth. This will then be attached to the dental implant. Now you will be able to smile, speak and chew again with confidence!
